UNTIL ALL I FELT WAS MY HEART BEATING

This collection deals with directness, authenticity and purity. The collection consists of five pairs of hand-made, unique shoes for the Modern hippies in the spirit of post-irony. The key words for this collection are purity, sensitivity, authenticity, and delicate roughness. As materials we used mainly white leather spiced with mixed yellow and orange and for the heels partly raw, partly polished wood; finnish birch and aspen. Our intensions with this collection was to combine the raw beauty of nature to the man-made but organic sculptural shapes. In the collection you can sense the freedom of the Modern hippies and their desire of sustainable, simple, but playful beauty.

2011

LIGHTHEARTED

Playful forms, bright colors and structural experiments. Inspiration for this collection of shoes was drawn on from the old handcraft traditions of Finnish culture. Our minds were occupied especially by the beauty of practical, numerous ribbons used in clothing and constructive and delicate straw decorations made in christmas time. In our shoes we wanted to combine some of the ideas in the construtions and surfaces. As a materials we used colored leather and in heels birch wood.

KUULA + JYLHÄ =
Two finnish designers, Essi Kuula and Marika Jylhä are forming together a creative studio/footwear label. Their work is a lot about experiments, but always also respecting the traditions of well made objects. In their design playfulness and sculptural forms meets beautiful combination of materials.

Kuula + Jylhä shoes are handmade in Helsinki/Tallinn with time and passion. Collections consists of unique pieces and small series.

Essi Kuula graduated year 2012 from the University of Art and Design Helsinki MA-program, major in textile design. Marika Jylhä graduated year 2010 from Häme University of Applied Sciences Footwear program as a Bachelor of Cultur and Arts and is currently continuing her studies in the Estonian Academy of Arts in the MA-program.
